Founded in 1979, Olympia Electronics S.A. is the market leader in the Greek electronic safety and security industry by using state of the art technology.Olympia Electronics currently employs 174 people with 10% in R&D and its products are exported to 72 countries worldwide.
One of the latest achievements of Olympia Electronics, which was registered as a patent in Greece, is the innovative emergency luminaire using supercapacitors and nanotechnology photoluminescent legends. This is an emergency luminaire, which uses a supercapacitor as a backup source, instead of the common batteries used in most emergency luminaires. The use of supercapacitors as backup power source leads to a plurality of advantages. The lifetime of the luminaire is prolonged up to (10) years instead of the three (3) years of common luminaires, resulting in a great maintenance cost reduction. Moreover, the charging time of the emergency luminaire with supercapacitors is also much lower which means great energy saving. By comparison, a common luminaire with batteries needs ten (10) hours charging time, while a luminaire with supercapacitors needs only one (1) hour.
Finally, the addition of fluorescent nanotechnology legend, which is the indication of the emergency luminaire, is able to absorb ambient light, in this case the light of the LED, to store it and then to emit it when the charging stops.
This reinforces the autonomy of the system, while after discharge of the power supply of supercapacitors in LEDs, the legend emits the stored energy for a sufficient time providing adequate lighting to evacuate a building without further energy consumption. The combination of these two technologies makes GR-900/30L/SC an innovative product of great autonomy compared to the widely used emergency luminaires, while it achieves more than the planned autonomy of backup source without further energy requirements, has low maintenance costs, low energy consumption of the main network and long lifetime.
The main goal of Olympia Electronics is to develop the supercapacitor technology to the emergency lighting systems and fire alarm systems, as it follows the Green development model and the EU directives in order to reduce energy consumption and increase energy efficiency of electronic devices.
On the agenda of new products using supercapacitors, except ofthe common emergency luminaires there are the ambitious Central Battery Systems (CBS), where even with the common batteries, they manage to significantly increase the energy efficiency, decrease the energy consumption and reduce the maintenance costs of the emergency lighting installation in buildings.
The emergency luminaires are powered by a central battery system, which monitors & controls their operation, and as a result we can shift to integrated building management solutions. The aim is to test the supercapacitors as a backup energy source to supply these big loads, so as to move into innovative, energy-efficient systems.
The charging time of supercapacitor will be shorter and the energy consumption will be lower, there will be an increase incharging- discharging cycles, with a minimum reduction of capacity and in the end the lifetime of the product will be much longer, resulting in a tempting and innovative product to buy. Market requires backup energy sources with more than 10 years lifespan and with great potential to provide a high amount of energy in a short time that is why the supercapacitors are an object of study and research of Olympia Electronics, so as to include them in theCentral Battery Systems.
Last but not least, supercapacitors have high tolerance to extreme temperatures and high humidity environmentsand in combination with a longer lifespan make them a very innovative and valuable product for power supply.
