Patol to exhibit at FIREX International

Patol, the global leader in the design and supply of specialist fire detection products for industrial applications, is returning to the Firex International exhibition, to display and demonstrate its full product range, including all its latest additions.

Exhibiting on stand C125, the company is an industry leader with considerable expertise in the provision of both fire detection products and services, specialising in linear heat detection cable (LHDC) as well as infra-red transit heat and flame sensors for monitoring material moving on conveyor belts and long-range, infrared flame detectors. Patol also offers special fire and safety control equipment and services to industrial customers.

Its expertise ranges from discrete military vehicle monitoring through to multi-discipline systems covering all aspects of fire protection, process control and security. In addition to manufacturing its own ranges of detectors and sensors, privately owned British company Patol undertakes turnkey safety projects covering many aspects including the fabrication of special electronic equipment, software design, system engineering, contract management, installation and maintenance.

At Firex International in June, the company is looking forward to meeting customers old and new and is anticipating a successful three days. On display will be Patol’s linear heat detection cable (LHDC) in all its versions and different types of sheath or over-braiding. The company’s infrared sensors and its cable interface/control units will also feature prominently.

Simple but effective LHDC
Patol’s LHDC is manufactured to provide early detection of overheating in circumstances where other forms of detection would not be viable – either through the inability to withstand the environment or through prohibitive costs. It is available as non-resettable (described as ‘digital’) and resettable (or ‘analogue’) technologies.

Comprising of a twisted pair, two-core cable, digital LHDC operates by reacting to rising temperature. Each core is a tinned copper coated spring steel conductor and has special heat-reactive polymer insulation. The insulator between the two conductors plasticises at the design temperature creating a switch circuit at the point of operation. The cable has a protective chemical and UV resistant outer sheath. Additional physical protection is available as an option in the form of outer armour in stainless steel.

The various different forms of LHDC with protective coverings will all be shown on the Patol stand at Firex, including a new distinctively coloured cable for operation at excessive temperature levels.

Infrared heat and flame sensors
Patol produces a range of early-warning, infrared heat sensors designed to detect ‘black body emissions’ – a material’s electromagnetic radiation that has a specific spectrum and intensity determined only by its temperature. The sensors are set up to select not the normal visible spectrum, but the light with the longer wavelengths of these black body emissions that indicate temperature. Thus they are able to detect not only material already in full flame but also abnormal, pre-ignition temperatures. This makes it possible for the devices to successfully detect potential fire circumstances in extreme conditions where other sensors would be ineffective.

Designed to monitor large open spaces
For both open-air sites and enclosed areas such as aircraft hangars, the heat convection patterns, smoke stratification and collection profiles at the ceiling make heat and smoke detection less predictable than the use of ‘line-of-sight’ flame detection. With a detection range in excess of 100 metres, Patol’s long-range, flame detectors are designed to monitor these types of large open spaces for flaming fires. The detectors employ enhanced infrared monitoring technology that analyses the levels of infrared emissions within specific bands. The distinctive signature of a flame condition can be recognised whilst background and transient infrared spectra are discriminated, thereby providing enhanced immunity to false alarms.
